Jake

“Come on, Rachel. Let’s go out,” I say as I pick Mila up, and place her on my hip.

“Please, Mommy,” Mila begs too. “I wanna go out.”

Rachel shakes her head as a small smile tugs at her mouth. “How can I say no when my two favorite people are giving me those big, puppy dog eyes. But I have to study, so we can’t stay out late,” Rachel says as she leans in, gives Mila a kiss on the cheek, then kisses me on the mouth.

“Yay!” Mila cheers.

I place her on her feet, and give her a light tap on the bottom. “Go pick out what you want to wear, but make sure you take your coat,” Rachel says.

Mila runs into her room in our small home, and I can hear her rustling around trying to find her pink tutu. “I love you,” I say as I take Rachel in my arms, and give her a kiss on the nose. She’s been studying so hard. She needs this break.

“Yeah, yeah,” she playfully says. “But I’ve got so much I need to study.”

“I know. I promise, we’ll eat, and we’ll leave. She’ll probably fall asleep in the car,” I say as I pointedly look toward Mila’s room.

“I’m ready!” Mila walks out and smiles when she sees Rachel and I hugging.

“Ah, no, I don’t think so,” I say.

“Nope,” Rachel echoes.

Mila’s happy face quickly becomes sad. Her little chin quivers as her big green eyes fill with tears. “Don’t I look pretty?” she asks as she holds the lacy part out of her tutu and swirls.

“You look beautiful, but it’s way too cold to wear this.”

“But I’m wearing socks.” She points to her mismatched socks on her feet.

“You can wear the socks, but it’s too cold for the tutu,” I say.

“I’m going to get ready, I’ll be out in a minute,” Rachel says as she leaves me to look after our daughter.

“But I want to wear this.” She stomps her foot.

“And you can, when it’s warmer. Let’s go pick something together.”

“I’m nearly ten, daddy, I can pick my own clothes.” She holds up five fingers proudly.

“No, you’re nearly five, not nearly ten. And I’ll help you with your clothes.”

She lowers her hand and turns and with slumped shoulders and over-dramatic sighs, walks back into her room. “Come on, then.”

I chuckle at Miss Sass before heading into her room to help her with an outfit. “What about this?” I take a sweater out of her drawer and hold it up for her. She crinkles her nose up, then points to the tutu she’s wearing. “No.” I fold the sweater and place it back in the drawer. “This one?” I hold a pink sweater up for Mila’s approval. She rolls her eyes. “This one?” I hold a purple and yellow sweater out to her.”

“Yeah, I like that one.”

“Great.” I throw it on her bed. “Now, what about pants?”

“What about a skirt?”

“Show me the skirt you want to wear, but you have to wear tights, because it’s really cold.
